A Walk in the Woods

Had another great day off and got to spend some time in the woods in Ohiopyle State Park.  I photographed Cucumber Falls completely frozen over, the main falls and then a little in the woods.  At one point I was in the woods and noticed a set of footprints in the snow.  They were filled with the last snow and a little windblown but still visible due to the late afternoon sun casting its long shadows over the area.  And I wondered to myself, perhaps this is the road less traveled and the road which I should be following.

Water SlidesThis is the top of the natural water slides in Ohiopyle State Park.  I just don’t understand why there was nobody enjoying a ride down the slides.  Could have been that the temp was just a little over 15ºF.

Fireworks on the River

Tonight’s post keeps with the theme of dreaming of warmer weather.  One of my favorite things to do in the summer is to photograph fireworks.  And in the Pittsburgh area we love our fireworks, so there are plenty of opportunities to shoot them.

Think warm and enjoy!!

Out for a Ride

As I sit here and glance over at the thermometer it currently reads 25 degrees and falling.  So continuing with the “I wish it was warmer” theme.  I’m posting a photo I took this past summer in Ohiopyle State Park.  For this shot I used a D300 and a fisheye lens.  I then made adjustments in Lightroom 4 and Photoshop.

So here’s to warmer weather, bicycle rides, and relaxing in the sun.

Recreation of a Poster

So if your sitting around in the cold this winter and looking for something to do why not try and recreate a movie poster.  This shot is one that I did a couple of years ago for a project for one of the clubs that I belong to.  The assignment was to recreate a movie or book cover.  I chose to recreate the Schindler’s List movie poster.  For this shot I used a wall for a background and lit the subject with one of my studio lights.  I then overlaid the text, which is the actual names from the list, and combined everything into this recreation.

Do you think you can recreate a movie or book cover?

Water, Kayak, and Sun: Equal Fun

As I watched the snow fall and the wind blow today I thought back to the warm summer days, as I’m sure many do when faced with the bitter cold of winter.  So today I’m posting some photographs from a spot in Ohiopyle State Park along the Youghiogheny River.  The river runs through the heart of the park and people come from all over to kayak the section know as the lower Yough.  I spent one summer on the river working as a photographer taking photos of the rafters and kayakers.  And from time to time I’ll venture back to the old spot and take a few shots and enjoy a peaceful day in the park.

Hope this warms your bones if your in the dead of winter.

Carving an Ice Dragon

Todays post is a few photos from the Ligonier ice festival.  I was there on Sunday and got a few shots showing the concentration of the sculptors.  I was amazed at the speed at which they were able to take a block of ice and form it into a sculpture using a chain saw, grinder, and Dremel tool.  It was fun to watch and this year the weather wasn’t that bad.  It was about 35 degrees or so which isn’t that bad considering the last time I was there it was about 10 degrees.

Hope you enjoy.
