Out of the Snow Comes the Tulip

Tonight’s post is a collection of red tulips to keep us all looking forward to spring and warmer weather.  I am most definitely looking forward to spring flowers.  By the way it is currently 24 degrees.

A Leaf is Just a Leaf

Tonight photo is a simple macro shot of a couple of leaves that I took at a recent stop at Phipps Conservatory, in Pittsburgh.  I really enjoy macro photography and the extremely limited depth of field that you encounter, although it can be very frustrating the results are well worth the time and effort.

This is shot with a Nikon D300 and a Sigma 150mm macro lens.

The Tower of Oakland

Tonight I’m posting a couple of shots of a tower in Oakland, Pa.  This is near Heinz Chapel in Pittsburgh.  I found this building to be interesting as it seems a little out-of-place next to the modern building.  I don’t know what the building is or what it is used for, I just find it fascinating.

If you have any information about the building I would like to know a little more about it.

Waiting

Tonight post is a single image of a group of boats that I found just sitting there waiting to be taken out for a ride.  I often look for patterns or repeating shapes to photograph.  This image has a repeating pattern that takes you into the photo.  I chose to present this image in black and white as I felt that color was distracting to the overall mood of the photo.

Something to Consider

Tonight I would like to ask each of you that are photographers to consider joining a photo club.  This evening I spent some time among like-minded individuals discussing photography.  The Westmoreland Photographers Society, which I am president of, meets in Latrobe, Pa on the second Monday of the month.  It’s always refreshing to gather with the group for a critique or photo talk and just spend some time talking “shop”.  This evening we discussed several macro photographs brought in by he members.  And as always it was refreshing and enlightening.

If you have a club near you I suggest stopping by and seeing what they are all about.

Remnants of a Time Gone

Todays post is two photos from a set of smoke stacks from an old factory in Homestead, Pa.  The Pittsburgh region was once a major area for steel mills and other factories, thus the nick  name the “Steel City”.  Today many of the factories are gone, some have survived and there are a few remaining remnants of what once was.  The stacks in these pictures are in the parking lot of a movie theater.

Out for a Ride

As I sit here and glance over at the thermometer it currently reads 25 degrees and falling.  So continuing with the “I wish it was warmer” theme.  I’m posting a photo I took this past summer in Ohiopyle State Park.  For this shot I used a D300 and a fisheye lens.  I then made adjustments in Lightroom 4 and Photoshop.

So here’s to warmer weather, bicycle rides, and relaxing in the sun.

Butterfly Dreams

Tonights post takes us back to the warmth of summer, flowers, and butterflies.  I’m including two photos from a trip this past summer to Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh, Pa.  Every summer they have a butterfly garden with many different types of butterflies.  If your in the area be sure and stop by the butterfly garden.

Hope you enjoy.

Hiding I'm Looking at You

Recreation of a Poster

So if your sitting around in the cold this winter and looking for something to do why not try and recreate a movie poster.  This shot is one that I did a couple of years ago for a project for one of the clubs that I belong to.  The assignment was to recreate a movie or book cover.  I chose to recreate the Schindler’s List movie poster.  For this shot I used a wall for a background and lit the subject with one of my studio lights.  I then overlaid the text, which is the actual names from the list, and combined everything into this recreation.

Do you think you can recreate a movie or book cover?
